Natural Grass Irrigation Tips

If you've just installed new grass in your home and you're hoping to preserve that grass and make it flourish, there are some steps you need to take when it comes to providing the right amount of irrigation for your new lawn. So to help you achieve the optimal results of grass that always looks green, healthy and new, here are some useful tips regarding watering your lawn.

Morning Watering Is Best -- The most ideal time for you to water your new lawn is in the morning. The temperature in the morning is always the lowest it's going to be, which means that your grass will have time to absorb the most amount of water during that cool time period. If you water in the afternoon, the sun's heat will often evaporate the water before it can seep deep into the roots, and you'll deprive your grass of much needed moisture for optimal growth and health. If you water your lawn in the evening, the water will stay wet overnight as it gets cooler, which can lead to undesirable conditions that create fungus

Test the Sod When You Water -- Many people irrigate their grass without understanding that the water needs to seep several centimetres into the ground in order to reach the roots. But you can't just rely on longevity of watering to assure that your roots are receiving sufficient water, you have to actually dig out a section of your grass with a shovel as your lawn is watering and check to see if the roots are wet. If the roots are wet, then you know how long to water your grass. It's important that you don't exceed the amount of time it takes for the roots to get wet, or you will over-saturate your lawn, which can damage the soil.

Invest In A Built-In Irrigation System -- Your new lawn will grow best when you install a sprinkler system instead of relying on a sprinkler that attaches to a water hose. Those types of sprinklers are typically sold with an oscillating watering motion, which shoots the water straight up instead of in the horizontal motion common to in-ground sprinklers, which helps prevent rapid evaporation.

With these tips, you should see some good results with your new lawn, though you have to remember not to water your lawn too often, because that can not only lead to damaged soil, it can also shorten the length of your grass roots, because the roots will push up closer to the surface in order to reach moisture and that isn't good for your lawn.
